Oreo dirt cups with gummy worms

Dirt cups are the ultimate kid party dessert because they are supposed to look messy. Crushed Oreos are the dirt, chocolate pudding is the mud, and gummy worms crawl out of the top. Kids absolutely lose their minds over these and they take about 10 minutes to put together with zero baking.

Let kids crush the Oreos in a bag and layer their own cups. Let’s make it together.

Ingredients for Oreo dirt cups

Ingredients

Oreo Dirt Cups with Gummy Worms

  • 1 package (3.9 oz) instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 2 cups cold milk
  • 1 cup whipped cream or Cool Whip
  • 15 Oreo cookies
  • 8 to 10 gummy worms
  • 6 clear plastic cups

Optional toppings:

  • Extra crushed Oreos on top
  • Gummy bears
  • Sprinkles
  • Mini chocolate chips

How to Make Oreo Dirt Cups with Gummy Worms

  1. Mix. Whisk the chocolate pudding mix and cold milk together in a bowl for 2 minutes until thick and smooth. Let it set in the fridge for 5 minutes.
  2. Crush. Put the Oreos in a zip-lock bag and crush them with a rolling pin or the bottom of a cup. You want a mix of fine crumbs and small chunks for the best dirt texture.
  3. Fold. Gently fold the whipped cream into the set pudding until combined. This makes the pudding lighter and creamier.
  4. Layer. Spoon a layer of crushed Oreos into the bottom of each cup. Add a layer of pudding mixture. Repeat one more time. Finish with a thick layer of crushed Oreos on top as the dirt surface.
  5. Worm. Stick 1 to 2 gummy worms into each cup so they poke out of the dirt on top. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving so the layers set.

Tips

  • Let kids crush the Oreos in the bag. They love smashing things and it is the most fun step.
  • Use clear cups so you can see the layers of dark dirt and chocolate pudding through the sides.
  • Make the pudding slightly thicker than usual by using a little less milk. It holds up better in the cups.
  • Chill for at least 30 minutes so the layers firm up and do not slide into each other.
  • These are perfect for birthday parties, Halloween, and any time you need a dessert that makes kids laugh.

Variations

  • Flower Pot Cups: Skip the worms and stick a paper flower into the top of each cup for a spring garden version.
  • Halloween Graveyard: Add Milano cookie tombstones with RIP written in icing for a spooky version.
  • Vanilla Dirt: Use vanilla pudding and Golden Oreos for a sandy beach version with Swedish Fish instead of worms.
  • Dirt Cake: Layer everything in a big bowl instead of individual cups for a family-style dessert.
  • Healthy-ish Dirt Cups: Use chocolate Greek yogurt instead of pudding and top with crushed chocolate graham crackers.

Chocolate graham crackers, chocolate wafer cookies, or any chocolate sandwich cookie will work. Crush them the same way for the dirt layer.
They keep for up to 2 days in the fridge. The Oreo crumbs soften slightly over time but they still taste great. Do not freeze them as the texture changes.
